" As the wind brushed through my hair, I realized the true essence of freedom."
Just like each year, last year (2023) too, after lot of long discussions, I decided to make a trip to Nepal considering the varied interests of all the members of my family .
But inside my heart I always wanted to turn it into a wildlife photography trip, of course not to be disclosed amongst the family members or else the trip was in danger of being called off.
So we planned to visit Kathmandu, Phokhra and Chitwan national park. My adventure began in Kathmandu, when I decided to explore the streets all by myself as no one wanted to wake up early. With the help of hotel staff I managed to hire a cycle rickshaw puller who promised to take me through narrow streets of old Kathmandu, the bustling capital of Nepal.
Exploring the narrow streets of old Kathmandu is a journey through time. The labyrinthine alleys, lined with ancient temples, bustling markets, and traditional Newari houses, create a tapestry of history and culture. The scent of incense mingles with street food aromas, while vibrant colours and the hum of daily life envelop you. Every corner reveals a new facet of Kathmandu's rich heritage, making it a captivating and immersive experience. The city's vibrant culture, ancient temples, and friendly locals provided a warm welcome. I felt a growing sense of confidence, as I explored the narrow streets and historic sites.

Traveling solo as a woman can be both empowering and exhilarating, and my trip to Nepal as a photographer was a testament to this freedom. Nestled between the towering peaks of the Himalayas and the lush plains of the Terai,
Nepal is a paradise for bird enthusiasts and adventurers alike. This journey not only allowed me to capture the stunning avian diversity of this beautiful country but also reinforced my belief in the importance of independence and courage for women.

Next, I travelled to Pokhara, a city that offers breath-taking views of the Annapurna mountain range and serene lakes. The true adventure began here .
While leaving from India, I had approached few birders from Nepal to help me find out a local guide for birding in Pokhra. The biggest challenge was to convince my family members to allow me to leave the group and go for birding expedition in a new land with an unknown person.
My exam started with my husband’s interview with this guide in small local joint, trying to understand where all he will take me and what will be our travelling mode which turned out be most exciting part of the trip. Somehow after tons of questions I passed the exam and my trip was granted for the following day till late noon.
The idea of traveling alone to Pokhra valley as pillion rider on a scooter with an unknown guide met with mixed reactions from family. Concerns about safety and the challenges of solo travel were voiced frequently. However, I knew that this journey was something I needed to undertake for myself. Armed with my camera, a sense of adventure, and an unshakeable belief in my own capabilities, I embarked on my journey.
A day I never want to forget in my life. As we set out on our scooter through the verdant valleys of Nepal, the initial stretch of smooth, paved road lulled me into a sense of ease. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine mixed with the earthy aroma of the fields. Majestic mountains tower in the distance, their snow-capped peaks glistening under the clear blue sky.
However, as we ventured deeper into the valley, the pavement gave way to a rough, gravel-strewn path. Our scooter began to judder, the suspension working overtime to absorb the shocks from the uneven ground. Navigating through narrow, winding roads, flanked by terraced rice paddies that cascade down the hillsides in a symphony of greens. Occasionally, we encounter small herds of goats or water buffaloes being shepherded by local farmers, adding to the sense of adventure.
Despite the bone-rattling ride, there was an undeniable thrill in the journey. The combination of stunning natural beauty, the raw challenge of the terrain, Wonderful sightings of many species of Vultures, barefoot walk in the paddy fields chasing the beautiful water birds, crossing the hanging steel foot bridge and walking through the shallow river with shoes in hands created an unforgettable experience.
In the beautiful mountains and dusty valleys of Pokhra, I forgot the world I belonged to. As the wind brushed through my hair, I realized the true essence of freedom.

Chitwan was waiting for us, so we headed to Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its wildlife. The park's dense jungles and wide rivers are home to over 500 species of birds. Early morning walks along the Rapti River, accompanied by a local guide, offered spectacular sightings of a 10 feet long Indian python, peacocks, various birds and specially the Rhinoceros. Chitwan jungle experience can be penned down into another separate blog.

As our family adventure comes to an end, we cherish the memories made, from thrilling rides to quiet moments, every experience will never fade. With hearts full of joy and stories to share, we head back home, Grateful for the journey and the love that made us roam.

Reflections
My solo in Nepal was more than just a photography expedition; it was a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. In the stillness of the forests and the majesty of the mountains, I found a deep sense of peace and freedom. Embrace the adventure, trust in your abilities, and let the journey unfold. The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and there is no greater joy than exploring it on your own terms. It reminded me that the world is vast and beautiful, and as women, we have every right to explore it freely and fearlessly.
Every decision, every step taken, and every moment of solitude reinforced my belief in my own strength and capability.
